Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance (and later) Basket Pictures
I have grouped these pictures, as well as possible, by
structure.
There are round , oval , and rectangular baskets; large hampers, burden baskets and traveling baskets; pedestal baskets (like a vase), footed baskets, heavy-based baskets, and baskets with no base at all. Some baskets have covers; most do not. Most of the baskets employ vertical/horizontal weaves, but some have diagonal weaving. Most look sturdy, but there are some madeira weaves, too. There are some open-weave baskets, useful for circulation of air. And there are special-purpose items of wicker: dairy hut,. hen house, winnowing fans, baby cradles, and cages for poultry.
Although I have found several pictures of baskets with eggs, I
have not found any
of the so-called "egg baskets" or "fanny baskets" with the
double-scooped botton. Some people claim these are period; I just
have not seen any period pictures of them. If you know of any,
please contact me.
